The WJC, or more simply the World Juniors, is an annual international ice hockey tournament that features some of the best under-20 players in the world. A large number of NHL prospects participate in the event every year,

The event typically runs from the day after Christmas until early January, with a round-robin preliminary round preceding an elimination three-round playoff. The 10-team field is split evenly into two groups (Group A and Group B), with every team playing one prelim game against each of the four other teams in their group. The preliminary round uses a 3-2-1-0 point structure (3 points for a win, 2 points for an OT win, 1 point for an OT loss, 0 points for a regulation loss).

At the conclusion of the preliminary round, the top four teams from each group will move on to the playoff round, while the last place teams from each group will face off in a best-of-three series to determine who gets relegated for next year’s tournament. In Group A, Canada and Russia will face off in a game that will determine the group’s first seed while the Czech Republic-Denmark matchup carries a number of implications, the most notable of which is that the game’s loser will fall to the Relegation Round.

The Group B scenarios are a bit more defined, particularly should Sweden defeat Kazakhstan as a win will see them through to the quarterfinal as the top seed. That would make tonight’s game between the U.S. and Finland one that,

It might be the most fun event on the hockey calendar behind the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so if you’re in need of a primer for this year’s tournament, we’ve got you covered.

Czech defenseman Jakub Galvas (2017 fifth-rounder) starts the day against winless Denmark, who has been outscored 22-0 in three games. The winner of the game will advance to the quarterfinals to play the top seed from Group B. Galvas has one assist in three games.

Swedish defenseman Adam Boqvist (2018 first-rounder) meets winless Kazkhstan. A regulation win by Sweden clinches the top spot in Group B. Boqvist has a goal and three assists in the tournament.
